Blue Sky Environmental Technologies (Pty) Ltd is a proudly South African company and the first to manufacture AdBlue® locally. Since 2010, we’ve led the way in producing high-quality diesel exhaust fluid for SCR systems, delivering cleaner mobility and supporting transformation within the local transport industry.

Our History – Pioneers of AdBlue® in South Africa

How Blue Sky introduced AdBlue® to South Africa’s public transport sector

2010 was an exciting year. The FIFA World Cup came to South Africa, bringing major public transport upgrades — including the Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system and the MiCiTi Bus in Cape Town.

Although South Africa followed Euro 2 emissions at the time, these new Optare Solo buses were fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems and rated Euro 4, requiring AdBlue®. For the first time, public transport here aligned with European standards — and Blue Sky proudly stepped in to meet that need.

Soon, Blue Sky was supplying AdBlue® to the Rea Vaya and Tshwane Rapid Transit systems as the demand for low-emission transport spread to Johannesburg and Tshwane. These services supported black-empowered taxi associations and helped drive inclusive industry transformation.

AdBlue® Manufacturing Excellence in South Africa

Locally manufactured VDA-certified AdBlue® for SCR diesel engines

From day one, Blue Sky focused on localizing AdBlue® production to reduce reliance on imports — especially since AdBlue® is two-thirds deionized water. This decision not only saved transport costs but supported job creation and industrial development.

In 2010, we partnered with Germany’s leading AdBlue® producer, Kruse (now Stockmeier), and built a manufacturing plant in Centurion, Tshwane. The Honourable Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters, officially inaugurated the plant.

Today, Blue Sky manufactures AdBlue® under license from the Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V. (VDA), and complies fully with ISO 22241, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 standards. Every batch is tested and traceable, with routine audits ensuring long-term product reliability.

VDA-Certified Bulk AdBlue® Supply Across South Africa

Reliable AdBlue® supplier for OEMs, fuel stations, and fleet operators

In 2015, Blue Sky acquired full ownership by purchasing Kruse’s shares. This enabled us to directly source premium European automotive urea — the core ingredient in AdBlue®. We supply AdBlue® in 5L, 10L, 20L, 200L, and 1000L containers, plus full bulk via 28,000L stainless steel tankers.

Our VDA-certified AdBlue® is trusted by OEMs, transport fleets, and fuel retailers across South Africa. And with diesel vehicle exports rising, local manufacturers depend on us for quality first fills — SCR vehicles won’t start or run correctly without AdBlue®.

How AdBlue® in South Africa drives empowerment through local partnerships

As a beneficiary of the Automotive Industry Transformation Fund (AITF), Blue Sky — through Viscol Eco Solutions — continues to invest in transformation within the South African automotive industry. This national OEM-backed initiative supports black-owned businesses aligned with SAAM2035 goals.

Through the AITF, we secured a dedicated 12,000L AdBlue® delivery tanker to boost our capacity for bulk AdBlue® delivery in South Africa, especially to OEM clients. This forms part of our broader commitment to sustainable growth and localisation.
